The exhibition tells the story of the Schauman family and the family in Jakobstad. The family has had a great influence on Jakobstad’s history and especially to its industrial history.
This year we offer the children’s event Schauman from pharmacy to paper to daycare and preschool groups, as well as elementary and high school groups. In the children’s event, visitors get to know the exhibition Schauman – from pharmacy to paper in the museum’s new exhibition hall Tempus. After the guided tour, we make scented sachets. The event takes place in Tempus (Otto Malmsgatan 3) 26.8. – 25.10.2024. A visit takes about an hour. As before, we can offer daycare and school groups from Jakobstad free visits. Other groups pay a guide fee, €40/group. Book your visit in advance to the museum’s office, tel. 06 / 786 3371.
The first Schauman in Jakobstad was the pharmacist Victor Schauman, who moved to the city in the middle of the 19th century. In addition to his work as a pharmacist, he also invested in industry. Together with Ph.U.Strengberg, he owned the tobacco factory which had already been founded in 1762, and began to develop the factory and its products. He also had a bone mill and a greenhouse. His son Wilhelm Schauman was responsible for Strengberg’s tobacco factory, when the factory expanded and grew in the late 1800s and early 1900s. In addition to this, Wilhelm Schauman founded a chicory factory 1883, a steam sawmill in 1896 and a sugar mill in 1900. All in Alholmen in the current factory’s (UPM’s) area.
Grand opening Tuesday 23.4.2024 at 6 pm. Welcome! The exhibition is sponsored by UPM.
